Do you ever get the feeling that summer is playing a cruel joke on us? I mean it’s 30 degrees during the week and then all of a sudden the weekend comes along and the weather is like, nah, you can all have grey skies and drizzle. Well it didn’t stop us this past weekend when we decided to get outside anyway and hike up to the Tutzinger Hütte from the small Bavarian village of Benediktbeuern. It was a fantastic hike that follows the winding Lainbach stream which gushes down from the peak of the Benediktenwand and ends up in the Kochelsee lake and do you know what? The sun did come out for us in the end!Image may be NSFW.

Clik here to view. This hike is very easy to get to with public transport. You can buy a bayern ticket and jump on a train from Hauptbahnhof, either taking you directly to Benediktbeuern or you might have to change at Tutzing. Either way it takes just an hour. From Benediktbeuern, walk down Bahnhofstr. away from the station. This road continues into Dorfstr. before you take a left onto Mariabrunnstr. This road will take you about 30 mins to get out of the village and onto the beginning of the walk. Then you can follow signs to Tutzinger Hütte and you have a variety of routes to choose from. We went up via. the Wildbachlehrpfad and back down via the Waldlehrpfad. Both routes are fairly easy so it doesn’t matter which one you start with.

Clik here to view. The hike follows an easy gravelled path so it’s perfect for families and there are plenty of signs that show you shorter round routes if you don’t want to hike up all the way to the Tutzinger Hütte. The path follow a beautiful stream and the cold air from the mountain water is such a delight on a balmy summer’s day. The path doesn’t change much for around 2 hours so it’s very difficult to get lost. When this path ends, you enter the forest and it is a steep half hour climb on rough terrain to the Tutzinger Hütte. Stick with it!Image may be NSFW.

Clik here to view. After the forest path you get to a clearing and you can immediately see the stark grey face of the Benediktenwand and the cute wooden house in front is the Tutzinger Hütte. The Hütte is a very popular German Alpine club (DAV) hut, built in 1906 and re-built in 2000. The hut boasts a fantastic restaurant with a terrace overlooking the impressive Benediktenwand rock face. What’s more, the accommodation at the hut looks so comfy and welcoming, it was hard to drag us away after our long hike. Definitely book months ahead if you want to stay there over a weekend!

Clik here to view.A great hike, even if it is long and what is better, it’s so easy to add on different routes. Next on our list? Hiking the 4 hours from Lenggries to the Benediktenwand and down to the Tutzinger Hütte, maybe staying overnight before hiking back down to either Kochelsee or Benediktbeuern.
